Job Title and Location R2855898 Automation Engineer Location: Toronto, ON Overview The Automation Engineer will execute automation engineering activities for strategic capital projects within the Toronto Technical Services Organization. The role involves managing development, design, commissioning, qualification, and maintenance of automation systems while interfacing with Process, ITS, Production, Maintenance, and Quality teams to ensure proper installation and regulatory compliance. Main Responsibilities Support configuration, administration, and maintenance of manufacturing computer and automation systems, including process control and building automation systems.
Lead projects in the design, development, and qualification of automated processes, equipment, and systems. Assist the manufacturing assistance team with troubleshooting and issue resolution for computer and automation systems. Lead small cross‑functional teams to meet project requirements and initiatives.
Interpret automation requirements throughout project design and implementation phases. Conduct reviews with stakeholders to ensure designs meet project budget and schedule. Lead installation and commissioning activities for automation systems, coordinating with various trades.
Support mechanical completion and startup activities. Participate in FAT, SAT, and Critical Test plan execution. Review C&Q test plans and support commissioning and qualification tasks.
HSE Requirement Supervise and monitor compliance with employment and health and safety legislation, ensuring employees work within applicable policies, procedures, and regulations. Participate in incident investigation, respond promptly to safety concerns, maintain documentation, and cooperate with the Joint Health and Safety Committee. Ensure protective equipment usage and advise staff of potential hazards.
Qualifications Education: Degree or Diploma in Engineering, Science, Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent certification. Experience: Minimum 3 years of applied automation design engineering, project experience. Additional experience in construction/installation, equipment start‑up, qualification, and/or validation.
Experience with Allen Bradley PLC, Siemens PLC, DeltaV, instrumentation and control panel hardware. Preferred knowledge of FactoryTalk AssetCentre. Understanding of unit operations used in biotech and vaccine manufacturing (bulk manufacturing, downstream operations, formulation, SIP, CIP).
Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices and industry standards. Strong analytical and engineering analysis skills. Experience with computer systems validation practices (GAMP) and authoring/reviewing SOPs, on‑the‑job training, and controlled documents.
