Job Description
The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for developing, validating, and optimizing machining and manufacturing processes for CANDU nuclear reactor pressure vessel components and associated safety-related hardware. This role requires technical expertise in precision machining, nuclear quality requirements, and manufacturing process control, combined with proven experience in Lean Manufacturing, Production ramp-up, and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES). The Manufacturing Engineer acts as a technical leader, ensuring that manufacturing processes are safe, repeatable, compliant, and capable of meeting nuclear code, quality, cost, and schedule requirements.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop, implement, and optimize machining processes for nuclear pressure boundary components used in CANDU reactor pressure vessels. Define manufacturing sequence, tooling approaches, cutting parameters, and sequencing for complex, high-precision nuclear components. Ensure manufacturing processes meet nuclear code, customer, and applicable technical specifications.
Develop and manage ITPs, PFMEAs, rework or repair plans as applicable. Support shop floor execution through hands-on engineering support during setup, first-piece validation, and production runs. Lead manufacturing readiness activities for new product introductions (NPI) and production ramp-ups.
Validate process capability through trials, first-article builds, and process qualification activities. Identify and mitigate risks related to capacity, cycle time, tooling, and quality during scale-up. Support cross-functional teams to ensure smooth transition from development to steady-state production.
Apply Lean Manufacturing principles, including waste elimination, value stream thinking, and flow optimization. Lead and support 5S implementation and sustainment within machining and assembly areas. Participate in or lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
Use data-driven methods to identify inefficiencies and implement sustainable process improvements. Support the implementation, use, and continuous improvement of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES). Ensure accurate routing, operation sequencing, data capture, and traceability within MES for nuclear components.
Collaborate with Quality and Operations to ensure MES supports nuclear record retention and compliance requirements. Design and develop fixtures, tooling, and work-holding solutions to support safe, repeatable, and precise machining operations. Create and maintain engineering drawings, layouts, and designs in accordance with company and nuclear standards.
Collaborate with Quality Engineering to ensure fixture designs support inspection and dimensional verification requirements. Develop, maintain, and improve standardized work instructions , setup sheets, and process documentation. Ensure work instructions are clear, controlled, and suitable for use in a nuclear manufacturing environment.
Train and support manufacturing personnel in the proper execution of standardized work. Complete additional projects and responsibilities as required. EXPECTATIONS: Maintain exemplary attendance and punctuality; reliability is critical to project and shop performance.
Strict adherence to safety protocols and a proactive approach to workplace safety in all project activities.
