Position Summary The R&D Data Science organization is seeking a Principal Scientist, Data Science to serve as a hands‑on technical individual contributor responsible for designing, building, validating, and delivering applied AI/ML and statistical modeling solutions that support Drug Product Development & Supply (DPDS), with a primary focus on Therapeutics Development & Supply (TDS). In this role you will partner with Process Development, CMC, Clinical Supply, Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory, and Digital/Data Science teams to deliver practical, high‑impact data science and machine learning models that support core TDS responsibilities across CMC development, pharmaceutical product development, dossier preparation, technical development, and clinical supply.
Key Responsibilities Hands‑On Applied AI/ML Model Development Serve as a senior hands‑on individual contributor responsible for personally designing, coding, testing, validating, and refining applied AI/ML models for high‑value TDS use cases. Translate complex scientific and business questions into tractable modeling problems, selecting fit‑for‑purpose methods based on the data, decision context, assumptions, and expected business impact. Conduct rigorous exploratory analysis, feature engineering, diagnostics, error analysis, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty assessment to ensure models are credible, robust, and actionable.
Technical Delivery & Software Development Discipline Develop robust, reusable analytical workflows and modeling assets using Python and modern data science tooling, including cloud‑based services. Apply software engineering best practices, including version control, modular code design, testing, documentation, reproducibility, and code review. Use modern development environments, including AI‑assisted coding tools where appropriate, to accelerate delivery while maintaining quality, transparency, and maintainability.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration, Technical Leadership, and Business Impact Engage with scientific, technical, and operations stakeholders to understand requirements, design data and AI/ML solutions, and drive adoption. Support multiple concurrent projects, managing priorities and delivering maximum business value across the TDS network. Provide technical guidance to junior team members, consultants, post‑doctoral researchers, or collaborators while remaining an active hands‑on contributor accountable for measurable business impact.
Qualifications Required 3–5+ years of relevant experience in applied data science, machine learning, statistical modeling, AI/ML solution development, scientific computing, or related quantitative disciplines, preferably in a complex R&D, pharmaceutical development, manufacturing, supply chain, healthcare, or technical operations environment. Strong Python programming skills and demonstrated use of modern analytical development practices, including version control, testing, documentation, reproducibility, and code review. Strong applied problem‑solving skills, with the ability to translate ambiguous scientific, technical, or business questions into rigorous quantitative solutions.
Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to explain model assumptions, outputs, uncertainty, and implications to both technical and non‑technical audiences. Preferred Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Operations Research, Chemistry, Physics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or another related quantitative or scientific discipline. Experience in pharmaceutical product development, CMC development, process development, analytical development, manufacturing, regulatory dossier preparation, clinical supply, or related life sciences environments.
Familiarity with regulated (GxP) or standards‑driven environments and the implications of data quality, traceability, reproducibility, documentation, and model governance for applied data science work. Exposure to developing and/or deploying agent‑based AI solutions. Your work will directly support CMC development, clinical supply, dossier preparation, and the broader development‑to‑supply continuum, helping Johnson & Johnson accelerate scientific decision‑making, improve development execution, and deliver next‑generation therapies to patients globally. Pay Transparency The anticipated base pay range for this position is $117,000 – $201,250. Benefits Employees are eligible for the following time‑off benefits (subject to contract and date of hire): Vacation – 120 hours per calendar year; Sick time – 40 hours per calendar year (48 hours in Colorado, 56 hours in Washington); Holiday pay – 13 days per calendar year; Work, Personal and Family Time – up to 40 hours per calendar year; Parental Leave – 480 hours within one year of the birth/adoption/foster care of a child; Bereavement Leave – 240 hours for an immediate family member, 40 hours for an extended family member; Caregiver Leave – 80 hours in a 52‑week rolling period (10 days); Volunteer Leave – 32 hours per calendar year; Military Spouse Time‑Off – 80 hours per calendar year.
