Job Overview Hubbell Research is responsible for conceiving of, maturing, and demonstrating novel technologies to be used throughout Hubbell’s extensive product line. Research activities span sensors, controls, communications, analytics (including machine learning and AI), cloud computing, embedded systems, and electronic and electro‑mechanical devices. This work requires highly motivated researchers with both breadth and depth across electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, and applied scientific computing.
Responsibilities Senior Research Engineer will contribute to the research, development, implementation, and demonstration of advanced technologies and algorithms related to power systems, analytics, sensing, controls, communications, and distributed computing systems. The successful candidate will be expected to work independently on technical problems, collaborate across disciplines, engage confidently with unfamiliar technical domains, and contribute to the long‑term technological direction of Hubbell. A Day In The Life Design, implement, and optimize production‑quality software and algorithms for research and commercial applications.
Conduct scientific computing experiments, numerical simulations, and technical analyses to support research initiatives. Develop plots, visualizations, technical reports, and engineering/scientific papers to communicate findings and support decision making. Contribute to algorithm development, optimization, and validation efforts.
Develop and support embedded systems and firmware solutions where required. Participate in agile product and research development activities. Collaborate with internal teams, business stakeholders, and external experts to solve challenging technical problems.
Investigate and evaluate new technologies, methodologies, and approaches without requiring direct prompting. Present technical concepts, research findings, and recommendations clearly and confidently to technical and non‑technical audiences. Support Hubbell Research’s mission to revolutionize the electrical power industry through advanced technology development.
Qualifications What will help you thrive in this role? 3+ years of work experience in production software development, including experience in cloud computing, optimization of algorithms, and consideration/optimization of hardware and software architectures. 4+ years of experience with scientific computing: ability to perform experiments and do numerical calculations, produce plots to aid decisions, and produce technical reports and engineering/scientific papers. 4+ years of experience in algorithm development. 2+ years of experience in embedded systems and firmware development. 2+ years of agile product development experience. Educational background in electrical engineering, mathematics, mathematical/theoretical physics, or mathematical statistics. Understanding of probability and statistics.
Comfort and competence in applied mathematical topics. Soft skills: Active curiosity and desire to learn new topics. Ability and excitement to engage confidently with new contexts well outside of past experience and technical domains.
Self‑starter who takes initiative to jump in and take action wherever and whenever a gap or need arises, who looks into new things / new approaches without being prompted or asked. Comfortable asking questions and takes initiative to connect with experts and stakeholders outside of the core team to obtain advice on a new project or initiative. Understanding of data compression (e.g. work experience or an undergraduate/graduate course). Understanding of basic electrical circuits (e.g. RLC circuits).
