Role Henderson Engineers is looking to hire a Senior Mechanical Engineering Manager to join their Community Sector. An Engineering Manager serves as a hybrid discipline technical leader and people manager within their sector, maintaining a strong technical presence while also responsible for team development, performance feedback and resource management. They lead a team of engineers and designers and play a critical role in developing the team to their full potential through mentoring and career pathing, and connect staff, projects and technical resources to deliver technical excellence, operational efficiency and meet sector and organization-wide goals.

What We Do We provide total building system design and construction services across multiple markets for industry leaders. You’ll work on projects for mission-critical, higher education, sports, healthcare, grocery, restaurant, and retail sectors within our service areas.

Minimum 12 years of relevant progressive experience. Expert knowledge of engineering design, codes, design guides and standards across a broad range of practices and project types.
Working knowledge of earned value, contracts and construction processes and methods. Working knowledge of Revit and Bluebeam Revu. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and engineering design software applicable to your discipline.
Demonstrated history of building trust-based relationships, collaboration, and continuous improvement. High emotional intelligence with ability to lead with empathy and clarity, navigate performance conversations constructively, and support team members through challenge and change. Interest in growing others through regular feedback, career guidance and mentoring.
Strong technical aptitude and ability to learn, understand and teach systems and processes. Effective verbal and written communication with designers at all levels. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Team-oriented, capable of leading less-experienced designers and collaborating in a highly collaborative environment. Ability to adapt to changing work environments, priorities and organizational needs; ability to prioritize, execute and direct multiple tasks; own coaching and feedback processes. Self-starter, proactive, and willing to teach, manage and help others as needed.
Trustworthy with the ability to handle sensitive information. Preferred Qualifications Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred. Additional certifications (e.g., BEMP, CPD, CDP, NICET, RCDD) preferred.
Sustainability certifications (e.g., CDP, LEED, WELL) preferred. Performance as an Engineer of Record (EOR) preferred. Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities Team Leadership & Development Lead, manage and mentor a team of discipline-aligned engineers and designers.
Act as a hiring manager and career coach, providing performance feedback and guidance on skills progression. Participate in project scheduling to align staffing with scope and monitor progress toward objectives. Provide hands-on coaching and conduct individualized goal-setting meetings.
Assist sector leaders with goals, policies and standards at the practice/sector level. Champion directives and facilitate upward feedback to leadership. Collaborate to manage project staff resources and discipline budgets.
Improve project and design quality via the quality review process; may perform final project reviews. Teach Henderson design guidelines, standards, policies and procedures as a technical resource. Oversee project coordination activities for their team (scope, schedule, client meetings, delivery, etc.).
Foster a client-centric mindset within the team. Share information and ideas for technical and process improvements with peers and leaders. Drafting & Design Direct preparation of simple to complex design documents, system layouts, drawings, schematics and specifications.
Lead projects from concept design through completion and review shop drawings for conformance. Evaluate feasibility of systems/equipment and recommend products for application. Produce solutions to complex engineering problems through direct involvement or advisory capacity.
Ensure production of drawings, specifications, reports and analyses meet scope, schedule, cost and quality requirements. Client Experience Communicate with clients to develop and coordinate requirements and scope; maintain proactive communications throughout the project cycle. Anticipate and respond to questions from clients and architects; assist with fact-finding as needed.
Visit job sites to verify conditions and observe construction progress. Resolve conflicts involving owners, architects and contractors as needed. Continuous Learning Identify and fill gaps in knowledge on a continuous basis.
Share emerging technologies and stay up to date on evolving codes and standards. Professional Engineer & Engineer of Record (where applicable) Consistently perform at a higher standard for PE license and Engineer of Record responsibilities, including making engineering decisions and delivering high-quality work. May be enabled as an Engineer of Record with additional signing/sealing responsibilities where applicable.
