A Senior Engineering Manager is a senior technical leader with broad responsibilities related to the health, growth and performance of engineers within a sector. They lead a team of engineers, drive technical excellence and operational efficiency through discipline-specific oversight, people development and strategic resource management to ensure the organization delivers high-quality work while supporting professional growth.

They maintain a strong technical presence while guiding staff to execute the sector\'s technical vision and strategy. Required Qualifications Bachelor\'s degree in a relevant engineering field (e.g., mechanical, electrical, fire protection, or architectural) preferred. High School Diploma or GED required.

Minimum 15 years of relevant progressive experience. Minimum 3 years in a leadership or management role. Expert knowledge of engineering design, A&E industry, codes, design guides and standards relating to a broad range of practices, projects and/or program types.

Proficient knowledge of earned value, contracts and construction processes and methods. Working knowledge of current industry tools and software, including BIM modeling, markup and annotation, workflow and task management applications. High emotional intelligence and ability to lead with empathy and clarity, navigate performance conversations constructively and support team through challenges.

High technical aptitude with ability to learn, understand, and utilize various systems and processes; experience teaching others. Proven track record of developing high-performing teams, aligning them with organizational goals, and fostering cross-discipline collaboration. Proven track record of serving as a connector between teams, leadership and business functions, translating vision into action and culture into practice.

Experience mentoring and developing future leaders. Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate with designers at all levels clearly. Effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Team-oriented with ability to collaborate in group projects and lead less experienced designers; ability to work independently as needed. Adapts to changing work environments, priorities and organizational needs. Ability to prioritize and direct multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.

Ability to give and receive constructive feedback and adjust to coaching. Self-starter, proactive and willing to teach, manage and assist others as needed. Trustworthy and capable of handling sensitive information.

Preferred Qualifications Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred. Additional certifications in relevant fields (e.g., BEMP, CPD, CDP, NICET, RCDD). Sustainability certifications (e.g., CDP, LEED, WELL) preferred.

Experience as Engineer of Record (EOR) preferred. Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities Team Leadership & Development Leads coaching culture across a team of technical staff through goal setting, alignment with organizational goals, progress measurement, succession planning and mentorship. Builds strong leadership teams and supports engagement across multiple levels within a sector.

Oversees performance management for staff, sets expectations for Engineering Managers, and monitors sector-wide performance trends. Collaborates with sector leadership on business planning, staffing, capacity and cross-sector alignment. Cultivates psychological safety and inclusion, building trust and high-impact relationships.

Ensures clear communication of strategy to Engineering Managers and their teams. Acts as a career coach, providing performance feedback and guidance on skills progression. Performs employee relations and personnel management for the discipline.

Provides technical guidance and engineering judgement to solve complex challenges. Quality Assurance Manages quality strategies for the discipline and ensures standards are met. Manages quality assurance tools, processes, databases, priorities and best practices.

Drives quality initiatives to enhance engineering processes and improve workflows. Champions a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence. Supports design and implementation of process improvements with safety, regulatory and environmental standards in mind.

Sector Operations Works with sector leadership on resource allocation and staffing. Monitors earned value generation and recommends tools for accurate data monitoring and reporting. Ensures feedback loops for engineering initiatives, staffing and KPIs function smoothly.

Serves as a consultant on technical production staff interviews. Ensures team adheres to technical processes and standards and supports problem solving. Manages employee performance and operational needs including evaluations, development and timesheets.

Professional Engineer & Engineer of Record (where applicable) Performs to industry expectations for PE license and EOR responsibilities, delivering high-quality work with accountability.
