Senior Engineer, Autonomy - Tactical Behaviors (R4235)
Shield AI
Job Description
Job Overview This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy solving complex problems across a variety of domains and modalities in autonomous systems. The successful candidate will apply classical and learning‑based autonomy techniques to unmanned aircraft, integrating solutions into real‑world platforms with near‑term program impacts. What you’ll do Design tactical autonomy algorithms for unmanned aircraft operations across air, land, and sea domains.
Develop high‑performance software modules for planning, decision‑making, and behavior execution in dynamic, adversarial environments. Implement and test behavior architectures that support multi‑agent coordination, target engagement, reconnaissance, and survivability. Blend classical rule‑based systems with machine‑learning methods such as reinforcement learning to achieve robust, adaptive behavior.
Collaborate with cross‑functional teams (perception, planning, simulation, hardware, flight test) to integrate autonomy solutions onto real platforms. Deploy autonomy capabilities, participate in field tests and flight demos, and validate performance under operational conditions. Analyze mission logs and performance data to diagnose failures, optimize models, and drive iterative improvement.
Research and prototype new algorithms, identify capability gaps, and contribute to the autonomy roadmap. Support defense‑focused programs, adapting solutions to evolving mission sets and compliance requirements. Travel 10–15% of the year to offices, customer sites, and flight integration events.
Required Qualifications BS or MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience. Minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or 4 years with a Master’s, or 2 years with a PhD, or equivalent work experience. Proficiency in C++ and Python, and familiarity with real‑time operating systems (RTOS).
Strong background in robotics technologies, including motion planning, behavior modeling, decision‑making, or autonomous system design. Experience with unmanned system technologies and associated algorithms, particularly in the air domain. Experience with simulation tools and environments such as AFSIM or NGTS for testing and validation.
Excellent problem‑solving, troubleshooting, and performance optimization skills. Strong communication and teamwork abilities in multidisciplinary settings. Ability to obtain a SECRET clearance.
Preferred Qualifications Experience applying machine‑learning or reinforcement‑learning techniques in autonomy pipelines. Background in collaborative behaviors, swarm robotics, or distributed decision‑making. Familiarity with tactical behaviors for unmanned systems in DoD or government programs.
Experience with behaviors applicable across air, ground, and maritime vehicles. Hands‑on experience supporting flight demos or live exercises. Experience with UCI and OMS Standards.
