Research Scientist/Engineer 2
Dormont Manufacturing Co
Job Description
Job Description Job Title: Research Scientist/Engineer 2 Location: University of Washington, Seattle, WA About this Opportunity: As a member of the IPD Core R&D Labs, you will make important research contributions that accelerate progress in protein design. The Peptide Core also characterizes de novo proteins through intact protein mass spectrometry, providing rapid data analysis and quality control to the IPD. The successful candidate will work closely with IPD scientists to design, synthesize, troubleshoot, and analyze complex peptides and functional molecules.
We are seeking a scientist with strong critical‑thinking and troubleshooting skills, a willingness to thrive in a fast‑paced environment, and a working knowledge of organic chemistry, bioconjugation, and protein biochemistry. Key Responsibilities Design and produce a wide variety of synthetic peptides and peptide-like compounds using solid‑phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) with automated synthesizers. Conduct multi‑step syntheses employing organic chemistry techniques such as TLC, rotovap, flash chromatography, air‑free methods, and NMR.
Optimize standard operating procedures to improve yield, efficiency, and throughput of peptide synthesis pipelines. Document all wet‑lab protocols and maintain detailed records. Review, analyze, and troubleshoot experimental results to ensure data quality.
Maintain and troubleshoot LC/MS instrumentation (Agilent) and support researchers with deconvolution of mass spectrometry data using software such as Agilent BioConfirm and PMI‑Byos. Establish and nurture productive relationships with research colleagues, including training IPD investigators on core‑specific workflows. Assist in the management of undergraduate research assistants and participate in laboratory meetings and team‑building events.
Required Qualifications Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related field and 2 years of relevant experience in modern peptide synthesis techniques, purification, and analysis. Additional Requirements: Strong communication and organization skills with great attention to detail; willingness to acquire new skills and learn on the job; proficiency in modern peptide synthesis techniques, purification, and analysis. Desire: At least three years of full‑time laboratory experience; proficiency with peptide chemistry and/or synthetic chemistry and/or medicinal chemistry; experience with instrumentation such as peptide synthesizers (CEM, Gyros), lyophilizers (SP, Labcon), rotovaps (Buchi), LC/MS (Agilent), and HPLCs (Agilent).
