Manager/Senior Manager, BOGA Fund
International Institute for Sustainable Development
Job Description
The Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance (BOGA) is a first-mover alliance of governments and stakeholders that are working toward a global, managed, and just phaseâout of oil and gas production. BOGA was launched at COP 26 in Glasgow as the first governmentâled alliance committed to phasing out oil and gas production. Its core members have committed to ending new licensing rounds for oil and gas and to Parisâaligned end dates for production.
Since its launch, BOGA has played a central role in raising global ambition on the phaseâout of oil and gas, and establishing partnerships and platforms that support governments in taking their first steps toward a just transition. At COP 30, BOGA led highâlevel dialogues between major producers and consumers, shared progress on implementation under BOGA Fund programmes, and led the coordination of an unprecedented coalition of Parties calling for a roadmap for the transition away from fossil fuels. Looking ahead, the Alliance will continue translating the global commitment to transitioning away from fossil fuels into action, coordinating the most ambitious governments and developing credible pathways and finance for just transitions.
This means supporting BOGA membersâ ambitions, bringing new members, friends, fund countries and partners into the Alliance, and ensuring that dependency on oil and gas production â and the barrier it presents for the transition â is elevated and addressed within international climate, energy, and economic dialogues. The Fund The BOGA Fund was launched in 2022, with the aim of supporting developing countries in their transitions away from oil and gas. The BOGA Fund is designed to provide analytical, policy, and technical assistance to governments in the Global South that want to explore the risks of continued oil and gas development and the opportunities for alternative development pathways, with the aim of supporting requests for largerâscale, longerâterm support from the multilateral system.
The Fund was doubled to $20 million in 2023. To date, five country programmes with a range of institutional partners have been established, in Kenya, Colombia, Barbados, Brazil and Nigeria. BOGA announced a collaboration with the NDC Partnership at COP 29, offering support through the Fund for governments that reflect the transition away from fossil fuels in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement.
Now, the first group of NDC programmes are due to be announced.
