Estimated Duration: 2 years Job Description: The Engineer Design contractor position assists in the planning, design, and development of technical standards for gas distribution infrastructure projects. The right candidate must be a self-starter, excellent communicator, critical thinker and able to make sound decisions.

This position is an exciting opportunity for persons who enjoy the challenges of supporting the construction of natural gas facilities. As our Engineer in the design group, a typical day might include: Working on gas storage or gas fueling station assignments.
Performing assignments involving the design of components or functionality of pipeline products Involved in the planning and design of mechanical equipment and components involving maintenance of mechanical equipment. Performing system balances to determine the best overall solution to solve system issues or identify system low points and methods to best solve them. Provide oversight and support for construction activities.

You have excellent oral and written communication skills. You can work across a matrix organization structure with horizontal and vertical teams. Required Qualifications: The Engineer 1 position requires 0-5 years of related experience and an accredited bachelor’s degree.
BA/BS in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil or General) 1-3 years of progressive Engineering experience OR Equivalent academic education and experience. Job Responsibilities: Responsible for applying engineering processes, design criteria, and software applications to design and construct power related systems. Supports estimate preparation, develops design options, and prepares construction specifications.
Provide guidance, oversight, and quality assurance reviews for approved contractors as they develop design solutions, cost estimates, and construction packages. Creating a safe work environment by putting safety first Understand the process used for planning, design, operation, construction, and maintenance Understanding the functions and activities of various internal departments involved in design, construction, and maintenance Understanding design practices and work processes Using all software applications used in design Understanding industry and Southern Company design standards Supporting design standard and criteria development for the system Supporting construction and maintenance teams during day-to-day operations Estimating material for projects Transmitting construction packages and supporting specifications. Certifications/Licenses: Preferred: Engineer in Training (E.I.T.) Skillsets and Expertise Required: Project Management Ability to communicate with all levels in the organization Computer Assisted Design/Geographic Information System - basic proficiency MS Office - advanced proficiency CAD/GIS - intermediate proficiency Include introductory engineering knowledge Basic problem-solving skills Limited discretion making independent decisions based on procedure and review with supervisor Basic discipline software knowledge Strong work ethic Positive attitude The ability to build effective relationships with plant staff, design engineering staff and/or vendors.
