Job Description
Job Overview ABS Government Engineering Services (GES) is searching for a Senior Engineer I to assist with ship structure, stability, and load line reviews. This role involves performing engineering design review and analysis assignments for major or smaller projects, applying conventional engineering knowledge to meet the complex demands of naval architecture and marine engineering. The successful candidate will support Canadian and U.S. government agencies, including the Canadian Coast Guard, Department of National Defence, and U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers, by providing classification and certification services for surface vessels. What You Will Do Under the supervision of an experienced engineer or engineering manager, perform detailed engineering review of ship structural plans and stability analyses for compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and contract commitments. Perform principal calculations using computer-aided engineering tools to predict the structural integrity of the vessel.
Conduct classical stress calculations, finite element stress analysis, and fatigue analysis. Develop finite element models primarily with FEMAP and solve them with NASTRAN. Carry out seakeeping analysis and structural dynamic analysis using ABS DLA/SFA software.
Prepare technical reports and collaborate with other engineers to resolve problems. Maintain technical quality, consistency, continuity, and timeliness of all assigned projects to ABS standards. Implement and maintain ABS Quality System requirements after receiving ABS Quality System training.
What You Will Need B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or related disciplines; an M.S. may be preferred. 5 to 10 years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or classification society. Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software and experience with stability analysis tools such as GHS or NAPA. Experience performing stability analyses in accordance with relevant rules and regulations.
Exposure to finite element methods through coursework or supervised research. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of related technical disciplines. Ability to identify, analyze, and propose solutions to complex problems.
Good command of the English language. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to work well with others.
Familiarity with ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems. Nice to have Professional or chartered engineer license. Reporting Relationships The incumbent reports to a senior‑level engineer or technical manager; this position has no direct reports.
