Job Description

Job Title: Controls Engineer Job Description The Controls Engineer evaluates production data, layouts, and CAD drawings to design and implement technological improvements in manufacturing processes. This role focuses on configuring, programming, testing, and troubleshooting PLC-based control systems and related components, with a strong emphasis on Allen-Bradley platforms and GM machine controls. The Controls Engineer supports automation initiatives, conducts simulations to validate PLC designs, and provides ongoing technical support and troubleshooting for equipment and PLC programming issues.

Responsibilities + Evaluate production data, layouts, and CAD drawings to identify opportunities for technological improvements in manufacturing processes. + Configure, program, test, and troubleshoot PLC-based control systems and associated components to ensure reliable and efficient operation. + Leverage knowledge of GM machine controls, servo drive hardware, and related software to design and implement robust control solutions. + Program PLCs using RSLogix 500, RSLogix 5000, and CodeSys in accordance with project requirements and industry standards. + Develop and maintain ladder logic and other control logic to support automated equipment and production lines. + Conduct simulations to verify PLC code and control system design, performing verification and validation to ensure correctness and safety. + Provide technical support for automation systems, including assisting with user testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities. + Respond to and resolve queries related to PLC programming, control logic, and system performance. + Troubleshoot equipment and systems within the assigned area of responsibility to minimize downtime and improve reliability. + Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering and production, to support continuous improvement of automated systems. + Document control system changes, configurations, and troubleshooting steps to maintain accurate technical records. Essential Skills + Proven experience troubleshooting PLC-based control systems in a production or OEM environment. + Hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley PLCs and related hardware. + Proficiency in PLC programming using RSLogix 500 and RSLogix 5000. + Ability to work with CodeSys for PLC programming and control system development. + Strong troubleshooting skills for control systems, including diagnosing and resolving issues with PLCs, I/O, and field devices. + Experience with DeviceNet communication networks. + Working knowledge of ladder logic and its application in automated systems. + Experience with vision systems integrated into automated equipment. + Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. + Ability to interpret and work from CAD drawings, layouts, and technical documentation. + Strong analytical and problem-solving skills applied to automation and controls challenges. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience working in an OEM environment, particularly with large automotive manufacturers. + Familiarity with GM machine controls and related standards. + Previous experience supporting automation projects from concept through implementation and validation. + Ability to collaborate effectively with production, maintenance, and engineering teams. + Strong written and verbal communication skills for documenting systems and supporting user queries. + Adaptability to a high-paced production environment with changing priorities.

Work Environment This position is based in an OEM plant within a unionized environment. The role follows a 3rd shift schedule, typically working six days per week from 9:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. with regular overtime for a total of approximately 55 to 60 hours per week. The Controls Engineer works on-site around automated equipment, PLC panels, and production machinery, using tools such as Allen-Bradley PLC hardware, RSLogix 500, RSLogix 5000, CodeSys, and DeviceNet networks.

The environment is fast-paced and production-focused, requiring a strong commitment to safety, collaboration with plant personnel, and readiness to support equipment on the shop floor. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Arlington, TX. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $55.00 - $63.00/hr.
