Job Description
Job Profile Summary This role focuses on providing professional and nonâprofessional nursing care services in accordance with physician orders. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following clinical nurse duties: assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care needs of a designated group of patients or providing nursing care and identified clinical support tasks within the scope of practice for achievement of the patientâs plan of care as directed. This position requires a nursing license.
It is a professional individualâcontributor role that may direct the work of other lowerâlevel professionals or manage processes and programs. The majority of time is spent overseeing the design, implementation, or delivery of processes, programs and policies using specialized knowledge and skills typically acquired through advanced education. This seniorâlevel role requires advanced knowledge in the job area typically obtained through advanced education and work experience.
Responsibilities include managing projects or processes, working independently with limited supervision, coaching and reviewing the work of lowerâlevel professionals, and resolving difficult and sometimes complex problems. Job Overview This position plans, organizes, and oversees daily clinical and administrative operations of a designated unit or program. The role prepares staff schedules, requests and allocates resources, and facilitates coordination of care to meet patient care and operational requirements.
It ensures that patient care aligns with the goals, mission, and vision of the hospital. The position supervises and evaluates nursing and support personnel and participates in the selection of new hires. It leads or participates in hospital, departmental, and multidisciplinary teams, committees, councils, and special projects.
This leader promotes high standards of nursing practice, supports a Magnet culture, and adheres to Board of Registration in Nursing rules, ANA scope and standards, ANA code of ethics, hospital policies, and regulatory stipulations. Minimum Qualifications Three (3) years of demonstrated clinical nursing practice, including progressive leadership responsibilities. Registered Nurse (RN) license.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Certifications (e.g., ACLS, PALS) relevant to the department and type of care may be required. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
Specialty nursing certifications. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required for ICU, ED, PACU, and cardiac interventional unit. Duties and Responsibilities Contribute to an environment that facilitates the development of clinical expertise of staff via role modeling, teaching, and coaching/mentoring.
Use knowledge and expertise to identify potential problems and/or resources for patients and families. Ensure all staff maintain competencyâbased practice based upon patient population. Utilize an ongoing process of questioning and evaluating practice and provide informed practice.
Create practice changes through research utilization and experiential learning. Anticipate and identify opportunities to apply evidenceâbased practice. Develop and implement a process improvement plan for area(s) of responsibility.
Maintain and develop clinical knowledge, judgment and skills. Propose topics to explore and participate in nursing research. Supervise unit or department personnel by evaluating work performance, providing guidance and timely feedback based on outcome measures.
Maintain a working knowledge of clinical and patient satisfaction initiatives, key performance indicators, standards of nursing practice and outcomes of patient care. Practice a constellation of nursing activities responsive to the uniqueness of the person, creating a compassionate and therapeutic environment to promote comfort and prevent unnecessary suffering, including vigilance, engagement, and responsiveness of caregivers, family, and healthcare personnel. Identify the need to coordinate patient care conferences to help ensure best caring practices and outcomes for patients and families.
Participate in interdisciplinary rounds to address patient/family needs and discharge planning. Foster patient, family, and professional relationships that are reciprocal and synergistic, characterized by mutual respect and professional growth. Show sensitivity to recognize, appreciate, and incorporate differences and preferences into the provision of care, including cultural differences, gender, sexual orientation, religion, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, and values.
Identify issues arising from individual differences and develop awareness of these issues in nursing staff, medical staff, and other healthcare providers. Role model, teach, and/or provide ageâspecific and developmentally appropriate patient care in accordance with established guidelines and scope of practice. Identify and encourage resolution of conflicts between others without making any party feel diminished.
Respect, appreciate, and support the diversity of ideas, thoughts, and competencies among staff, peers, colleagues, and customers. Advocate and represent the concerns of the patient/family/community; serve as a moral agent in identifying and helping to resolve ethical and clinical concerns within the clinical setting. Advocate on behalf of the nursing staff to represent the concerns of patients, families, and staff.
Work in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team to balance interventions with values that emphasize quality of life, consumer choice, riskâbenefit decisions, access to care, and integrity of human life. Support an ethical foundation for professional practice and patient care. Support proactive identification and addressing of ethical issues through a systematic process utilizing the ethics advisory committee as needed.
Promote healthcare at the local, state, national, and/or international level. Take professional risks by demonstrating commitment to issues and values they truly believe in. Support staff in the delivery of appropriate patient/family education.
Evaluate the effectiveness of patient/family education and identify opportunities for improvement. Monitor the learning needs of staff and communicate opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills. Serve as an expert and role model or mentor for professional practice.
Identify avenues to pursue personal professional growth. Provide constructive feedback, support and resources to enable the nursing staff to develop skills and abilities. Demonstrate awareness of self and othersâ communication style and adjust to meet the needs of the situation.
Inspire and motivate oneself and staff to pursue advanced education and/or certification. Encourage others to become an active member of professional organizations. Support staffâs professional and personal growth.
Encourage staff to seek clinical advancement via the Professional Recognition Program. Engage self and others in selfâdevelopment appraisal on a regular basis, identifying areas of strength as well as areas for personal/professional development. Promote and encourage others (patients, families, healthcare providers, community) to achieve optimal and realistic patient goals.
Collaboration includes interdisciplinary work and ability to negotiate and resolve conflict. Model, teach and/or mentor professional leadership and accountability for nursingâs role within the healthcare team. Lead and/or participate in departmental and hospital programs, committees, and/or special projects to achieve desired outcomes.
Improve the quality of care through shared governance principles. Communicate important information via shiftâtoâshift huddles. Recognize, respond, and provide followâup on issues, concerns, and suggestions on behalf of the patient population and staff.
Provide timely followâup on critical incidents or sentinel events. Assume accountability for daily operations at the unit level. On a daily basis, allocate resources and coordinate services to optimize patient care and services.
Provide input in developing and monitoring operating and capital budget; implement strategies to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Recognize the potential impact of change on all people involved. Keep current on regulatory issues and trends and employ strategies to meet standards in a proactive manner.
Physical Requirements Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing and walking. Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching.
Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodâborne diseases. Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations.
Handles emergency and crisis situations. Skills & Abilities Clinical reasoning, which includes clinical decisionâmaking, critical thinking, and a global grasp of the situation, coupled with nursing skills acquired through a process of integrating formal and experiential knowledge. Ability to facilitate patient, family, and staff learning across the care continuum.
Contributes to a learning environment characterized by safe discourse, mentoring, and team development. Demonstrated leadership abilities; able to work under stressful situations; possesses good oral and written communication skills and is able to effectively work in a changing environment. Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians, and the healthcare team.
Excels at demonstrating the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients in the relevant area of nursing practice.
