Job Description

About the Role The City of Hamilton is looking for a strong and inspiring City Manager to lead its public service and help deliver quality services to residents. The City Manager is accountable to the Mayor and City Council, and will guide the organization by providing strategic leadership and ensuring the effective use of public funds through the corporate administrative departments, programs, and services in accordance with Council policies and strategic plans. Responsibilities Support the city’s strategic priorities of sustainable economic and ecological development, safe and thriving neighbourhoods, and the effective functioning of City Hall and municipal government transparency.

Drive innovative solutions and increase responsiveness across the public service. Lead the organization, motivating and guiding staff toward shared missions and resident‑focused outcomes. Ensure responsible and sustainable financial management and stewardship of public resources, including oversight of the Corporations Department.

Build and maintain intergovernmental relationships, advocate for funding, and collaborate with elected officials, front‑line staff, and stakeholders to deliver results in the public interest. Maintain a culture of accountability, transparency, and high‑quality customer service, and respond effectively to crises. Engage with Indigenous communities in the spirit of Reconciliation and support vulnerable populations as part of municipal “well‑being” initiatives.

Qualifications Deep commitment to city governance and an ability to improve government delivery, efficiency, and implementation. Strong leadership and people‑management experience in a unionised, results‑oriented setting. Multidisciplinary thinking and experience in complex environments, with roles that provide holistic decision‑making skills.

Exceptional visioning, communication, and interpersonal skills for engaging elected officials, community organisations, and diverse stakeholders. Proven ability to build diverse, motivated, high‑performing teams and to communicate through strong internal and external systems. Experience with intergovernmental relations, advocacy for funding, and sustainable financial stewardship.
