Backend Engineer Who are we? We do this through an API-first approach that streamlines access to our market-leading Categorisation, Decisioning, and Analytics engines, together with Payments Initiation. In doing so we deliver actionable insights with reduced transaction costs, accelerated settlements, and a safer, more convenient customer experience. Weâre a regulated entity offering AISP, PISP, and CISP services, trusted by leading banks, insurers, asset and wealth managers, pension companies, financial advisors, and fintechs to enhance financial outcomes for their clients.
What do we offer? We have offices in London and Bristol together with access to co-working space. We offer the opportunity to work remotely (role, business and client dependent) with support for your home office set-up if required.
We have regular all company away days and other company, client and team meetings, your attendance at which will be mandatory. Whilst this will be a remote first role we ask that applicants are based within commutable distance to either London or Bristol for regular in person meetings with the team. You will replace a key senior figure, taking ownership of highâthroughput microservices and the underlying infrastructure that powers our financial data processing. You are here to ensure our systems are resilient, performant, and capable of handling complex data flows across both cloud and onâpremise environments. Core Responsibilities Engineering & Technical Execution (50%) HighâThroughput Systems: Develop and optimise Node.js microservices designed for massive scale and low latency.
EventâDriven Architecture: Manage and refine our Kafka implementation and broader eventâdriven patterns to ensure data integrity and system decoupling. FullâStack Backend Ownership: Maintain and optimise our data layer, specifically working with PostgreSQL. Architecture & Infrastructure Strategy (30%) Hybrid Infrastructure: Oversee the engineering and deployment of services across AWS and GCP via Kubernetes.
System Design: Identify bottlenecks in the current architecture and propose/execute longâterm structural improvements. Collaboration & Technical Leadership (20%) Internal Consultancy: Act as the technical authority for highâperformance systems, advising on "build vs. buy" and architectural tradeâoffs. Process Evolution: Contribute to the maturity of our CI/CD, monitoring, and alerting frameworks to ensure 24/7 reliability.
Success Profile: The First 9 Months At 3 Months (Onboarding & Integration) System Fluency: Demonstrates a deep understanding of the Moneyhub eventâdriven mesh and specific Kafka implementation. Initial Impact: Has successfully audited and delivered at least one highâpriority fix or optimisation within the core microservices. Relationship Building: Established trust with the engineering team as a reliable, seniorâlevel peer.
At 6 Months (Ramp & Stability) Ownership: Has taken full ownership of a major service area, significantly reducing technical debt or improving throughput metrics. Infrastructure Fluency: Is independently managing deployments and troubleshooting issues across K8s and AWS/onâpremise environments. Measurable Performance: Can demonstrate a quantifiable improvement (e.g., latency reduction or cost optimisation) in a highâtraffic area.
At 9 Months (Full Productivity & Strategy) Architectural Influence: Has contributed to the longâterm architectural roadmap, moving beyond maintenance to proactive scaling. Trusted Advisor: Functions as the "goâto" expert for highâperformance backend challenges across the department. Mission Alignment: Consistent delivery of highâvalue features that support Moneyhubâs growth in the financial data sector.
Essential Experience Strong experience building highâthroughput, lowâlatency backend systems in production Deep understanding of distributed systems, scalability, and performance tradeâoffs Handsâon experience designing and operating microserviceâbased architectures Solid experience with relational databases, including schema design, query optimisation, and performance tuning (e.g., PostgreSQL or similar) Experience deploying and operating services on Kubernetes in cloud environments (AWS and/or GCP) Proven ability to identify architectural bottlenecks and lead meaningful technical improvements Confidence operating at senior level: influencing technical direction, making pragmatic tradeâoffs, and supporting other engineers A deliveryâfocused mindset, balancing longâterm technical quality with business outcomes aligned to Moneyhubâs mission Helpful but Not Essential Commercial experience with Node.js in highâperformance or highâscale environments Experience working with Kafka or other eventâstreaming platforms (e.g., Pulsar, Kinesis, RabbitMQ) Prior exposure to eventâdriven architectures and asynchronous data processing Experience operating hybrid or multiâcloud environments Background in financial services, fintech, or dataâheavy platforms Familiarity with observability tooling (metrics, logging, tracing) in 24/7 production systems #J-18808-Ljbffr
