Position Summary: Sikich is seeking a Back-End Web Developer who will be responsible for building, maintaining, and optimizing the server‑side architecture that powers client websites and applications. This role focuses on developing scalable, secure, and high‑performing solutions across both traditional monolithic WordPress environments and modern headless architectures.
The ideal candidate has strong experience with Next.js, PHP and MySQL, is comfortable working in API‑driven environments, and understands how back‑end systems support front‑end performance, content management, analytics, and SEO. The individual in this role will be a problem solver who collaborates closely with UX designers, front‑end developers, and strategists to deliver reliable and maintainable solutions. Job Responsibilities: The back‑end web developer will work closely with designers, front‑end developers, and project managers to support and enhance client digital platforms.
Key responsibilities include: WordPress development – Supporting and extending WordPress‑based sites, including custom themes, plugins, APIs, and integrations. Headless architecture support – Building and maintaining back‑end systems that support headless websites, including Next.js‑based front ends consuming data via APIs. API development & integration – Creating and maintaining REST or GraphQL APIs, and integrating third‑party services such as CRMs, marketing platforms, analytics tools, and external data sources.
Data management – Designing and optimizing database structures, queries, and data flows to ensure reliability and scalability. Performance & security – Implementing best practices for application performance, caching, authentication, data validation, and security. Collaboration – Working closely with UX, front‑end, and strategy teams to ensure back‑end solutions align with user experience, SEO, accessibility, and business goals.
Maintenance & troubleshooting – Debugging issues, supporting existing client sites, and continuously improving code quality and system stability. Requirements for a Successful candidate: 5+ years of professional experience in back‑end or full‑stack web development. Strong proficiency in Next.js , PHP and MySQL .
Experience developing and supporting WordPress sites, including custom themes, plugins, and REST APIs. Experience supporting or building headless CMS architectures , including Next.js‑based front ends. Familiarity with modern JavaScript frameworks and how they consume back‑end APIs.
Experience in integrating third‑party systems and services. Understanding of web performance optimization, security best practices, and scalable architecture. Experience working in a collaborative, agency or multi‑client environment is preferred.
Experience using AI coding tools (e.g., Cursor). Preferred (Nice-to-have) skills: Experience with Sanity.io, Sitefinity, other headless platforms. Familiarity with GraphQL.
Experience with CI/CD pipelines, version control (Git), and modern deployment workflows. Understanding of SEO, analytics, and how back‑end decisions impact marketing performance. Experience working alongside UX and front‑end teams in a design‑driven environment.
